Marsha P. Johnson

Field: Civil Rights / Transgender Activism

Marsha P. Johnson was an African-American transgender woman, a self-identified drag queen, and a revolutionary activist. She was a prominent figure in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, which is widely considered the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

"No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us."

Impact

Alongside Sylvia Rivera, Marsha co-founded **S.T.A.R.** (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), an organization dedicated to helping homeless transgender youth. Despite facing extreme poverty and discrimination, she was known as the "Saint of Christopher Street" for her boundless generosity and joy. Her middle initial "P" stood for "Pay It No Mind," which was her response to those who questioned her gender or life choices.
