Leo Varadkar

Field: Politics / Government / Public Health

Leo Varadkar is an Irish politician who served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland. In 2015, during the run-up to the marriage equality referendum, he came out as gay in a radio interview, becoming the first openly gay government minister in Irish history. He later made global headlines as the country's first gay and biracial leader.

"It’s not something that defines me... but it is part of who I am."

Impact

Varadkar’s leadership symbolized a "New Ireland." His openness helped shift the public perception of LGBTQ+ individuals from marginalized figures to the highest echelons of state power. He played a crucial role in the successful 2015 referendum that made Ireland the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. By being a visible, competent, and conservative-leaning leader, he proved that sexual orientation is no barrier to serving one's country at the highest level.
