Pai Hsien-yung

Field: Literature / Kunqu Opera / Cultural Preservation

Pai Hsien-yung is one of the most celebrated figures in contemporary Chinese literature. Born in 1937, he co-founded the influential Modern Literature magazine. His most significant contribution to the LGBTQ+ canon is his 1983 novel Crystal Boys, which provides a raw and compassionate look at the lives of gay youth in Taipei's New Park.

"In our dark kingdom, there is only the present, no past, and no future."

Impact

Crystal Boys broke decades of social silence and became a beacon for queer people in the Chinese-speaking world. Beyond literature, Pai has been open about his lifelong relationship with his companion, Wang Daorong, providing a rare model of long-term same-sex devotion for older generations. In recent years, he has successfully revitalized Kunqu Opera (notably The Peony Pavilion), bridging traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern sensibilities.
